Raphael, “The School of Athens”, 1509-1511.

Two intellects built two societies: one, by the knowledge of nature, even at the contempt of art; the other, by the life of art even at the knowledge of nature.

Book XIV Chap. 28.–Of The Nature Of The Two Cities, The Earthly And The Heavenly. Accordingly, two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God; the heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self.

– De Civitate Dei, St. Augustine
